Now more than ever, it is extremely important that we are conscious of our carbon footprint. Image this, what if each family was given $1 million dollars which had to last 20 generations, and that was all they got. The fair way to distribute it would be $50,000 per generation, right? Well, imagine if 1 generation decided to take $500,000. Every generation after would be, well, screwed. Our planet and its resources work the same way, and clean air is the resource we are using up at the most alarming rate. There is a finite amount of abuse the earth can take, and our generation has dealt way more than its fair share. Here are 5 ways you can reduce your carbon footprint, and make a difference.
1. CARPOOL WHENEVER POSSIBLE
Imagine if everybody could carpool or take the bus. We would cut our travel emissions in half. Carpooling is not always practical, but there are alternatives. When carpooling just isn't an option, try biking or taking the bus to work at least once a week, and avoid rush hour as much as possible.
2. PLANT A GARDEN
It is estimated that 13% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from the production and transportation of food. Not only will gardening help reduce your carbon footprint, but it will also help your wallet. Save money while saving the planet, now that's what I call a win-win. If you're like me and have zero skills as a gardener, try cutting back on your beef and dairy intake.
3. MAKE SOME IMPROVEMENTS ON THE HOUSE
Remember back in the day when your parents were always on you to turn off the lights when you left a room? It turns out, they might have been on to something. Keeping the lights off when you're not using them, and switching to energy efficient bulbs is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Also, take the time to make sure your home is properly insulated and sealed. Reduce drafts and air leaks with caulk, insulation, and weather stripping, and don’t set your thermostat too high or low.
4. START A RECYCLING PROGRAM IN YOUR HOME OR AT THE OFFICE
It is estimated that 29% of greenhouse gas emissions result from the “provision of goods", which basically means the process of disposing of all of our trash. If you are the artsy type, there are tons of crafts you can make using your recyclables. Here is a list of ideas. If not, try introducing a new recycling program at your place of work, or implement an at home recycling program to reduce your footprint.
5. BUILD YOUR WARDROBE ON HIPSTITCH
We care about the environment more than all the money in the world. That's why we plant a sapling with every item sold. Not a seed, but a sapling. Saplings have a much better chance of becoming a full grown tree, and we refuse to cut corners. Did you know that just 1 tree 12 inches in diameter can eliminate 1 ton of CO2 annually? To put that into perspective, if you plant just 6 trees, you can eliminate your car's footprint (about 6 tons of CO2 a year). We want to eliminate as much CO2 as possible and eliminate greenhouse gasses one shirt at a time.
